What is success? I am not going to try to explain success. I think a precise meaning is impossible! Is it winning a gold medal in the Olympic Games or winning Wimbledon Championships, or being awarded a Nobel Prize? What else?Ibelieve personal success could be anything - it does not have to involve public recognition. Who is more successful? A millionaire who is unhappy, or a common person who lives a simple, quiet, sincere and happy life? The simplest definition of personal success, I think, is to set out to do something and to succeed in doing it.

The first step on the road to success starts with belief. Believe you can succeed and you will. Achieving success in whatever endeavor (努力) you choose may be the goal of life because it gives you freedom from worry. Could that be?

Success means different things to every one of us. Some people believe it is measured in the financial term; others believe it is helping others rather than helping themselves. However, most people are motivated to a great extent by public recognition. How many people are really happy? How many people are really doing what they want to do with their lives? Incidentally, the ability to imagine makes us different from animals

Most important of all, I believe success is a matter of personal growth. If every day you are developing or growing just a millimeter, I believe you are successful. For me, just being a slightly better person each day is success. I’ve got a very long way to go!

Finally, always remember success is a process and is not simply a matter of arriving at a destination. It’s the journey that really matters. Success is what you become in the often very difficult and dangerous journey down the river of life.

    28. What is personal success according to the author?

    A. Winning public recognition

    B. Being an unhappy millionaire

    C. Something impossible to define simply

    D. Succeeding in doing what you want

    29. Which plays an important role in one’s success according to the text?

    A. Intelligence B. Confidence C. Wealth D. Kindness

    30. According to the text, in what ways are humans different from animals?

    A. Belief B. Freedom C. Imagination D. Success

    31. What can be the best title for the text?

    A. What is success B. No true success

    C. How to be successful D. Success is reaching a destination

    D

The endangered pandas in Qinling Mountains might face a new threat (威胁):the loss of their food, bamboo, which makes up 99% of their meals.

Adult pandas spend most part of the day eating bamboo and have to take in at least 40 pounds a day to stay healthy. However, a new study published in Nature and Climate Change warned that they may soon find their food gone because most of the bamboo in Qinling Mountain Mountains might disappear by the end of the century as a result of the rising temperature worldwide.

A team made up of researchers from Michigan State University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences has studied the effects of climate change on the bamboo in Qinling Mountains. They have found that bamboo is very sensitive to climate change. “80 % to 100 % of the bamboo would be gone if the average temperature increases 3.5 degrees worldwide by the end of the century.” Said Liu Jiangguo, one of the report’s authors.

He added, “This is how much the temperature would rise by 2100 even if all countries keep their promises in the Paris Agreement. But you know what is happening around the world. ”

In recent years, China has been trying its best to protect the endangered pandas by setting up more and bigger nature reserves.

“But it is far from being enough and protecting the endangered pandas needs cooperation with the rest of the world, because their future is not just in the hands of the Chinese,” said Shirley Martin from World Wildlife Fund but not a member of the team.

The Qinling Mountains, in the southwest of China, are home to about 260 pandas. That is about 13% of China’s wild panda population. In addition, 375 pandas are living in research centers and zoos in China.

    32. What can we learn from the first paragraph?

    A. Lots of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains will probably disappear.

    B. Qinling Mountains cannot provide enough bamboo for the pandas.

    C. Pandas in Qinling Mountains are just threatened by the loss of food

    D. Pandas have already eaten 99% of the bamboo in Qinling Mountains.

    33. What does Liu Jiangguo mean?

    A. China needs more help from World Wildlife Fund

    B. Bamboo is sensitive to the change of temperature

    C. China is making great efforts to protect pandas

    D. It is difficult to control the temperature rise within 3.5 ℃

    34. How many wild pandas are there in China?

    A. About 260 B. About 635 C. About 2,000 D. About 2,635

    35. Which can be the best title for the text?

    A. The Disappearance of Bamboo

    B. Necessity to Change Pandas’ Food

    C. Efforts Made to Save Pandas

    D. A New Threat Faced by Pandas.
