I want you to be educated so that you can go anyway and spell the hardest word, I want you to be able to go among the Romans or the Medes and Persians and talk to any of them in their own native tongue.

    19. As one of the world’s top universities, Oxford attracts students from around the world. Besides needing a perfect academic record. students have to go through a rigorous ( 严格的 ) interview process, sometimes across days.

If you’re preparing for studying overseas, here’s our advice for putting your best foot forward.

    Questions

You might have heard about the strange questions you might face, such as why are ladybirds red? These questions are not as random (随意的) as they seem and are often related to your course or interests. In truth, there is no wrong way to answer these questions as they are designed to show how your mind approaches problems.

You can’t prepare for these, but you can practice explaining your thoughts aloud about different topics.

    Preparation

Most of your interviews will be made up of what you wrote in your application. So make sure you review everything you’ve submitted (提交) as you will be asked about any writers or scientific theories you’ve mentioned. It’s not a good look if you can’t discuss your subject area or struggle to form your own opinions about it.

It’s also OK to say you’re unfamiliar with a question, but always attempt to answer it.

    Interviews aren’t everything

Don’t worry about any mistakes you make. Your whole application is more than just a meeting, so take the time to de-stress and visit local sites.

It is also common for students to have an additional interview with another Oxford college if your interviewer is unsure about you. Take it as a second chance.

Overall, think and act as you usually would. Everyone there is gifted, but demonstrating (证明)) how your mind works and how you approach difficult things is how you will stand out.

【小题1】According to the passage, how can you prepare for the questions in interviews?

    A.Search for information about ladybirds.

B.Try to solve problems all by yourself.

C.Pay attention to your course or interests.

    D.Practice explaining your thoughts aloud.

【小题2】What does the underlined word “ additional”mean in the passage?

    A.Extra

    B.Special

    C.Usual

    D.Complete

【小题3】Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Interviews have something to do with what you wrote in your application.

B.You need to think and act much better than how you behave in your daily life.

C.You will be asked about a writer or scientific theories that you just heard about.

D.You should be careful not to make any mistakes when you are having interviews.

Around the world 50 Bucks(元)tells of Schacht’s great journey, from his town in northern Germany to some of the most faraway places in the world and back again. Thanks to a translation by Jane Gesme, this international bestseller in English is on sale now.

Reading Schacht’s book is like ping-ponging between worrying about your daredevil (胆大妄为的) son and being proud of your older brother. At parts, I was really frightened for his safety. In order to eat. he worked any job he could find -sailor. waiter, gold miner, model. He mostly slept in hammocks (吊床) on the street or else in his tent. He hitchhiked(搭车) everywhere, even across oceans as he found jobs on sailing boats in return for food and a bed.

However, Schacht’s book does not doubt people. He believes that many people in the world are kind, helpful and curious. This friendliness probably saved his life many times.

Though not perfect for everyone. Schacht’s ways of traveling force him to look for help from others. He meets a Canadian living on a boat in Colombia, who used to be an excellent cook. Schacht needs to learn how to cook in order to get a job on a ship to Panama. In these high-stress moments, Schacht only has a little time to find a way to his next destination ( 目的地 ). The relationships he makes along the way are life-changing. As he learns. “In most situations it is quite easy to help someone move forward when they would not have done it alone.”

From sailing across the equator (赤道) to speaking bad Korean in Gyeongju Schacht takes us around the world in surprising detail. Like Schacht, we are also thankful for the journey. We feel even more pleased that Schacht chose to share it with the world.

    21. (an excerpt from The all of the Wild)

Buck did not read the newspapers. So he did not know that there was trouble ahead. Trouble for every dog warn strong muscles and warm long hair, from Seattle to southern California. Some men had found a yellow metal in the Arctic darkness, and thousands of other men were rushing there. Those men wanted dogs that were heavy, with strong muscles for working hard and furry coats to protect them from the cold.

Buck lived at a big house in a sunny valley in California which was owned by Judge Miller. And Buck ruled over it all. He was born there. and had lived there for the four years of his life. There were many other dogs, but they lived together in the Kennels (狗窝), or inside the house. But Buck was neither s house dog or a kennel dog. The whole of Judge Miller’s lands was his. Buck was king — king over all the creeping, crawling, flying things of Judge Miller’s lands, humans included.

His father, Elmo, a huge St Bernard, had been the judge’ s inseparable (不可分离的) companion. And when he died, Buck took his father’s place. He was not so large — he weighted only sixty kilograms — for his mother, Shen, had been a Scottish sheepdog. He had had a good life and he was proud of himself, for he had not become a house dog. Hunting and other outdoor activities had hardened his muscles, and swimming had made him healthy.

This was Huck in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike brought men from everywhere to the frozen north. But Buck did not read the newspapers. And he did not know that Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was not a good guy. Manuel gambled (赌博) and wasted the little money he had. And one time when the judge was away on business, and his sons were busy with an athletics club, Manuel did something terrible. No one saw him and Buck go off on what Buck thought was a walk. No one saw them arrive at the railway station, where Manuel sold Buck to a man who was waiting for him.

Manuel put a rope round Buck’s neck, under his collar. Buck accepted this because he knew Manuel, but when the rope was given to another man, he growled dangerously. And when the rope was tightened round neck, he started to choke and jumped at the man in anger. The man fought him off and forced Buck to lie on his back, and tightened the rope even more. Buck had never been treated so badly in his life, and he never been treated so badly in his life, and he had never so angry. The his strength drained away and he soon became unconscious (失去意识的). He was still unconscious when the train arrived and the two men threw him into the baggage car.
