Depression(抑郁症)is a serious problem today. One expert says that depression is like cancer because it is “ widespread, costly and deadly ” . Depression hits onarpunbn in five

the world. Over any six-month period, between five to seven percent of the world's population will be suffering from a serious depression .

A rece nt research shows that the more tee nagers watch televisi on, the more likely they are to develop depressi on as young adults.

The researchers used a n ati on wide Ion g-term survey of tee nage health to in vestigate( 调查) the relati on ship betwee n media(传播媒介 )use and depressi on. They based their findings on more than four thousa nd tee nagers who were not depressed whe n the survey bega n in 2000.

As part of the survey, the young people were asked how many hours of television or videos they watched daily. They were also asked how ofte n they played computer games and liste ned to the radio. Media use totaled an average of five and on e-half hours a day. More tha n two hours of that was spe nt watchi ng TV.

Seven years later, in 2007, more tha n seve n perce nt of the young people had sig ns of depressi on. The average age at that time was twenty-one.

The researchers say they did not find any such relati on ship with the use of other media such as movies, video games of radio etc. But the study did find that every extra hour of television meant an eight perce nt in crease in the cha nces of develop ing sig ns of depressi on. Young men were more likely than young women to develop depression given the same amount of media use.

The study didn ' t explowatfching TV causes depression. But one possibility is that it was

taking time away from activities that could help preve nt depressi on.

Last December, the journal Social Indicators Research published a study of activities that help lead to happy lives. Sociologists from the University of Maryland found that people who describe themselves as happy spe nd less time watch ing televisi on tha n un happy people. The study found that happy people are more likely to be socially active, to read, to take part in religious services and to vote.

The survey shows that of all the media uses.

most tee nagers prefer to liste n to the radio

tee nagers enjoy watch ing TV very much

computer games are tee nagers ' favourite

magaz ines are men ti oned in the survey

The result of the research seems to prove

media uses do no harm to tee nagers

tee nagers are more likely to develop depressi on

those who don 'watch TV won 'develop depression

TV probably causes tee nagers to grow up with depressi on

Accord ing to the passage, we can infer that .

watch ing TV may lead to happ in ess

social activities can preve nt depressi on

a tee nager should play more video games in stead of watch ing TV

it was easier for young wome n to develop depressi on tha n young men

What is the best title for this passage?

Media use is harmful to tee nagers

Adults, Media use and Depressi on

Teens, Televisi on and Depressi on

Take great care of teenager ' s depression

Early one morning, more tha n a hun dred years ago, an America n inven tor called Elias Howe fin ally fell asleep. He had bee n working all ni ght on the desig n of a sew ing mach ine but he had run in to a very difficult problem: It seemed really hard to get the thread(线)to run smoothly around the n eedle(针).

Though he was tired, Howe slept badly. He turned and turned. Then he had a dream. He dreamed that he had bee n caught by terrible soldiers whose king wan ted to kill him and eat him uni ess he could build a perfect sew ing mach ine. When he tried to do so, Howe ran into the same problem as before. The thread kept getting caught around the needle. The king flew into the prison and ordered his soldiers to kill Howe. They came up towards him with their spears( 矛)raised. But

sudde nly the inven tor no ticed someth ing. There was a hole in the tip of each spear. The inven tor awoke from the dream, realiz ing that he had just found the an swer to the problem. In stead of trying to get the thread to run around the n eedle, he should make it run through a small hole in the cen ter of the n eedle. This was the simple idea that fin ally made Howe desig n and build the first really practical sew ing mach ine.

Elias Howe was not the only one in finding the answer to his problem in this way. Thomas Edis on, the inven tor of the electric light, said his best ideas came into him in dreams. So did the great physicist Albert Einstein. Charlotte Bronte also drew in her dreams in writing Jane Eyre.

To know the value of dreams, you have to un dersta nd what happe ns whe n you are asleep. Even then, a part of your mind is still working. This unconscious( 无意识的),but still active part

understands your experiences and goes to work on the problems you have had during the day. It stores all kinds of in formati on that you may have forgotte n or n ever have really no ticed. It is only whe n you fall asleep that this part of the brain can send messages to the part you use whe n you are awake. However, the unconscious part acts in a special way. It uses strange images( 图像)which the conscious part may not know at first. This is why dreams are sometimes called “ secret messages to ourselves ” .

Accord ing to the passage, Elias Howe was .

the first pers on that solved problems in his sleep

much more hard-work ing tha n other inven tors

the first person to design a sewing machine that really worked

the only person at the time who knew the value of dreams

The problem Howe was trying to solve was .

    A. what kind of thread to use

where to put the n eedle

how to desig n a n eedle which would not break

how to preve nt the thread from gett ing caught around the n eedle

Thomas Edis on is spoke n of because .

    A. he also tried to invent a sew ing mach ine B. he got some of his ideas from dreams

he was one of Howe's best friends D. he also had difficulty in falli ng asleep

What does the underlined phrase secret messages to ourselves mean?

Strange images are used to com mun icate ideas.

Images which have no meaning are used.

We can n ever un dersta nd the real meaning.

Some specially trained people can know them. 第 II 卷(主观题,共40分)
