President Theodore Roosevelt’s letter to his son
Dear Ted,
I was glad to hear that you were to be confirmed.
Secretary Root left on Monday and Governor Taft took his place. I have missed, and shall miss, Root badly. He has been the ablest, most generous and most disinterested friend and advisor that any President could hope to have; and immediately after leaving, he provided a great service by a speech at the Union League Club, in which he said in most effective fashion the very things I should have liked him to say; and his words, moreover, carried
英语试卷 第 3 页 (共 8 页)
weight when addressing such an audience. Taft is a splendid fellow and will be an aid and comfort in every way. But, as mother says, he is too much like me to be able to give me as good advice as Mr. Root because of the very differences of character between us.
If after fully thinking the matter over, you remain firmly convinced that you want to go into the army, well and good. I shall be rather sorry for your decision, because I have great confidence in you and I believe that in
civil life you could probably win in the end a greater prize than if you go into the army — though, of course, a man can do well in the army. I know perfectly well that you will have hard times in civil life. Probably most young fellows when they have graduated from college, feel pretty depressed for the first few years. In ordinary cases, it at first seems as if their efforts were not leading anywhere, as if the pressure around the foot of the ladder was too great to permit getting up to the top. But I have faith in your ability and your power to force yourself to
the front when you have once found out and taken your line. However, you and I and mother will talk the whole matter over when you come back here on Easter.
What mainly contributes to Mr. Root ’s being a good advisor according to the President?
His great generosity.
His effective speech.
Their differences in character.
Their similarities in character.
What did the President wish Ted to do?
Lead a civil life.
Do well in the army.
Force himself to the front.
Take post-graduate courses.
What did the President say about most young people starting their life after graduation?
They would make no efforts.
They would have a hard life.
They would look for a ladder.
They would have no confidence.

Trailers( 预告片 ) shouldn’t really be a hard thing to do: show some footage( 镜头 ), get people excited, but don’t give too much away. It ’s a practice that some movies struggle to do, with many either getting too enthusiastic about showing their big plot points, and others simply not catching the magic of the movie. Considering that humans struggle with this practice so much, the folks over the 20th Century Fox decided to see what a computer could do, tasking IBM ’s Watson, the supercomputer, with cutting together footage from upcoming Sci-Fi thriller, Morgan, to create the final trailer. (IBM Watson has done many things; beat human competitors in quiz shows, created reserved recipes and described the contents of photos. Now it has become the first-ever AI to produce a film trailer for the new sci-fi film.) The result was actually surprisingly good.
Using Watson’s experimental learning techniques, IBM ’s cutting edge AI sorted out hundreds of classic thriller trailers to learn what exactly gets an audience to that special place of being both scared and entertained. With that knowledge firmly in place, Watson processed the entire Morgan movie, selecting the 10 most thrilling and frightening moments to cut together into a trailer.
“ Watsonwas able to model the scenes visually in order to determine: was a scene scary? Was it a tender
moment? Was there sadness, or happiness? ”s Johnsaid IBMSmith. ’
Although a human editor was still needed to slice the scenes together to tell a coherent story, the AI shortened
the process down to only 24 hours when it typically takes around 10 to 30 days to complete a trailer. Still, it ’s a
great impressive achievement, which the likes of Terminator: Genisys could perhaps learn from in the future.
What does the author think is amazing according to the text? A. Human editors taking 30 days to make a trailer.
英语试卷 第 4 页 (共 8 页)
B. The 20th Century Fox having produced a thriller.
C. IBM ’s Watson having created a trailer for a thriller.
D. Humans being able to learn from machines in the future.
29.
What did IBM researchers do before Watson cut together footage from the movie, Morgan ?
A. Teach him to beat chess competitors.
B. Feed him over 100 horror trailers.
C. Create reserved recipes.
D. Talk about photos.
30.
What does the underlined word
“ coherentinthelast paragraph”
probably mean?
A. Exciting.
B. Reliable.
C. Consistent.
D. Exact.
What can we guess is the most difficult to Watson AI?
How long the trailer should be.
How Watson appreciates the story.
How many scenes a trailer needs.
How Watson decides the feelings.

Crying is the sign of the rawest of human emotions. We cry when we can ’thold inside what we feel any more.
We cry when we ’re at our best, and when we’re at our worst. By we, I mean all of us. Men included.
But we never see other men cry. In no western culture has it ever been acceptable for men to shed( 流泪 ) more
than a single tear, and even then it ’s reserved for grand victories, defeats and deaths. Dutch research suggests that
women cry between three and five times more than men. Generally men and women cry over the same things —
deaths, break-ups and homesickness, primarily, but researchers believe that men cry more often than women when it comes to positive events.
I want to admit. I ’m a bit of a cryer. However, having never really experienced deaths in my life, a few weeks
ago I experienced what it means to really, truly, pour my heart out in tears.
See, my dog — and 24/7 companion — was killed by a car right outside my house. Being a witness to this
painful event left me in shock for a good hour, but then the floodgates opened. Over the next 48 hours, I might have cried 20 times. Once or twice I crouched( 蹲 ) on the floor with my head in my hands and tears were the only outlet.
It is suggested in the book Adult Crying: A Biopsychosocial Approach that there’s a certain pleasure in crying.
It helps ease stress when there is no other way to express ourselves.
In those days after my dog ’s death, I remember thinking, “I’ve got to st op this crying ” . It felt unmanly. It felt
like a sign of weakness. I ’ve since realised that tears are for everybody; they ’re not gender-specific. They show we have sympathy, allow us to get rid of stress and just feel.
What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
Crying is a raw human emotion.
Crying is an emotion beyond control.
Crying is an emotion showing sadness.
Crying is an emotion showing happiness.
What ’s the difference between men and women in crying according to Dutch research?
They cry over different matters.
They cry at different times of life.
Women cry more often over deaths.
Men are more likely to have tears of joy.
34. What did the author think of his crying over his dog ’s death?
A. A sign of strength.
B. A sign of weakness.
英语试卷 第 5 页 (共 8 页)
C. Behavior of being womanish.
D. A way of reducing emotional stress.
What ’s the best title for the text?
Men, never cry like women
Men, it ’s OK to cry sometimes
Crying solves psychological problems
Crying explains differences between men and women

How to run international meetings
As more of us do business across cultures, it ’s best to prepare ahead of time before heading to the meeting
table. Here are four rules for different countries.
Stick to the schedule
Where: Germany, Austria, Japan
We’ve all been to meetings that have a loose agenda, if any at all. They don ’tstart on time and they seem to
repeat. 36 Japanese are more likely to create a detailed agenda and pass out supporting documents several
days before a meeting. 37 Meetings that run long in Germany are often taken to mean that the parties are
not communicating efficiently.
38
Where: China, Malaysia, Singapore
Debating a topic can go against th e traditional Chinese concept of “ savingwhich facemeans avoiding”, any
mistakes or actions that could bring embarrassment. Laughing at even an obviously amusing answer or pointing out a potential mistake can spoil the entire meeting.
Enjoy the interruptions
Where: Italy, France, Spain
When Pascal Soboll meets with clients in Italy or Spain, he ’s no longer offended if they leave early or arrive late. Rather than attend the entire three-hour meeting, he has learned that his colleagues there — and in some parts of France — attend based on their own timetable.
Rather than expecting people to sit through his entire presentation, he makes it easier for them to turn up as needed.
Please, no small talk.
Where: Finland, Sweden
In places like Finland and Sweden, where non-meeting related discussions like chat about the weather can be
regarded as a way to be off a formally-set agenda and as a waste of other people ’s time.
In some countries, including Finland, there are long pauses in the conversation.
40
These breaks are
used as a way to process what the other person is saying without interrupting.
A. Not so in these countries.
B. Germans and Austrians are similar.
C. Don ’teven think about a brainstorm.
D. There ’s often no way to tell how things are going.
E. Don ’ttry to fill them, though, with small talk or anything else.
F. What do the long silences, idle chitchat and serious faces really mean in context?
G. For Soboll, that means changing his own German-based expectations of client behaviour.
