When I was little, I'd see tons of bats flying around streetlights at night in my neighborhood in upstate New York.

By the time I turned 7,I noticed something strange: All the bats in my neighborhood had vanished, and I wondered why. Later I learned what had happened to my town’s bats. A disease called “white nose syndrome(白鼻综合征)” had killed 93 percent of New York State’s bats (and about 6 million bats across the country)! I was shocked. I asked the bat biologist what I could do to help, and she said, “Tell others what's been happening. Help people understand that bats are important to our environment and need to be protected."

I thought I must teach people about bats. My first stop? The library, where I eventually checked out every book on bats they had. Next, I started a Facebook page called Buddies for Bats and posted any photos, facts, and videos that I could find. Then I wrote a letter to the host of an environmental program on my local radio station, asking if they'd do a show on bats. (They did!)

But I still wanted to find a way to educate people face to face. I managed to make a presentation to a school. I also used tools to describe how bats help farmers (and protect our food supply) by eating crop-damaging insects.

I practiced my presentation until it shone like a polished stone. It went over so well that other teachers started requesting me. Over the past three years, I’ve talked in front of everyone from 5-year-olds to senior citizens! The more I present, the more I notice that I am changing minds. I have watched people go from dismissing bats as “disgusting(令人厌恶的)” to truly understanding them and advocating their protection.

Right now, I'm thinking of becoming a marine biologist (海洋生物学家) someday. As long as I'm helping animals, I'11 be happy.

    25. When the author was little, bats ________.

    A. lived mainly in the south of America

    B. existed in large quantities in upstate New York

    C. did great harm to the natural environment

    A. reproduced B. expanded C. starved D. disappeared

    27. Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly talk about ________.

    A. the author’s efforts to help protect bats

    B. how the author started Buddies for Bats

    C. why the author did a radio show on bats

    D. the difficulty the author had in educating people

    28. What can we infer about the author’s presentation?

    A. It was effective. B. It was far from satisfactory.

    C. It was ignored by the audience. D. It was boring.

    Dear Sir / Madam,

I live next to your school in Grasmere Road and I am writing regarding the very bad behavior of some of your younger students. In addition to this, I should like to bring to your attention to the irresponsibility of certain members of your staff when supervising (监督) students, evening activities.

Firstly, concerning the students' behavior, I should like you to make it very clear to those students walking along Grasmere Road towards the station that my front garden is not a place where people are allowed to leave their rubbish. When they leave school in the afternoons, they pass my house and throw empty cans, waste paper and even cigarette packets (although most of them are below the age for smoking) on my grass.

Could you also please ask your students not to shout and use bad language in the street, as this is harmful to the reputation of both your school and the area?

Regarding certain members of your staff, you are perhaps unaware of the fact that their evening activities sometimes continue well beyond ten and the noise is too loud. Last Thursday night the noise did not stop until 10:30 pm. Surely the members of staff supervising these activities could bring the events to a close at a suitable moment.

I know that I am speaking for many families in the area when I ask you to speak to your students and staff about these matters.

Should they continue to be so inconsiderate, I shall be forced to take matters further and shall have no choice but to write to the council(地方议会) .

    Yours faithfully,

    Mrs. J Barker

    29. The text is a letter of _______.

    A. introduction B. invitation C. complaint D. thanks

    30. Which of the following is destroying the area’s reputation in Mrs. J Barker’s eyes?

    A. Throwing rubbish. B. Smoking cigarettes.

    C. Making too much noise. D. Shouting and using bad language.

    31. What is Mrs. J Barker going to do if these matters are not solved?

    A. Take further action. B. Turn to a lawyer.

    C. Keep an eye on them. D. Continue to write to the school.

    D

I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a splendid, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.

Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more lasting emotion. Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily(暂时) forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.

I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to great parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything that spells “happiness”. But in memoir (回忆录) after memoir, they tell the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness.

Ask a single man why he resists(抗拒) marriage, if he’s honest, and he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment, for commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.

Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out whenever they want and sleep as late as they can. Couples with little children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.

Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating(解放性的) realizations. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can really increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happiness now seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.

    32. We can learn from the passage that____________.

    A. fun creates long-lasting satisfaction

    B. happiness is lasting while fun is short-lived

    C. fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness

    D. fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness

    33. To the author, the role Hollywood stars will play is to _________.

    A. write memoir after memoir about their happiness

    B. bring happiness to the public instead of going to parties

    C. teach people how to enjoy their lives

    D. tell the public that happiness is not related to fun

    34. In the author’s opinion, marriage____________.

    A. indicates duty and devotion B. leads to raising children

    C. affords greater fun D. usually ends up in pain

    35. Which of the following is the best example of “painful happiness”?

    A. Winning lottery by accident. B. A single man resisting marriage.

    C. Raising children. D. Buying some fancy clothes.

    第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2分, 满分10 分)

    根据短文内容, 从选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Preparing family meals used to be a full-time job in America. 36 Government records from a century ago show that women spent about 44 hours a week preparing meals and cleaning up afterward.

37 There are specialty stores where people can buy restaurant-quality equipment. And there are more foods available from around the world than ever before.

38 Women are now about half the country's workforce. Who has time to make a big meal when you can buy something ready to heat in the microwave?

For thirty years the NPD Group, a market research company, has studied the eating behaviors of Americans. In 1980, more than 70% of the main dishes served at the evening meal -- what Americans call dinner -- were prepared at home. Today fewer than 60% are homemade.

Susan Fisher is a nutrition professor at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She says some people may cook a big meal just once a month or for special events. She says much of the recent interest in cooking has more to do with the idea of a homemade meal than with the ability to do it night after night. “ 39 It smells wonderful, but you can buy it for two to three dollars a loaf.”

Susan Fisher says most people do not have the time or money to buy all their food from local farmers and prepare it at home. But that does not mean they lack interest in gaining valuable skills. 40

    A. Today women still do most of the cooking.

    B. People had to cut firewood, pump water from the ground and so on.

    C. For example, she currently has a waiting list for students wanting to take her food canning class.

    D. Eating more meals at home could reduce the amount of salt and fat in the American diet.

    E. It's a neat idea to have home-cooked bread.

    F. Today, kitchens are bigger and better-equipped than ever.

    G. Yet many families have less time to cook and enjoy meals together.
