I sat at my seat waiting for the school paper to be passed around. I waited anxiously, knowing that once I received it I would know how good a writer I really am.

When the paper arrived at my classroom, I nearly knocked down five of my classmates to get to the first paper. With a school paper in my hands, I returned to my seat. About a month earlier, I had handed in one of, what I believed to be, my best stories. I named it Symbol of Success. The head of the English Department at my school, Professor Cullen had said that she would include some reviews of students’ stories in the latest school paper. Professor Cullen was known for her rough criticism. Impressing her was very hard but I wanted to be the first to do so.

I sat at the edge of my seat as I read through the other story reviews. There wasn’t one story that got more than three stars .I became calm and wasn’t anxious to know my review. It was long after that I heard someone shout out “Five stars?! Seriously !” from behind me. I turned around and saw the shocked expression of Gene’s face, “Peter, your story got five stars!” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I turned my attention back to my story and saw the five stars at the end of the review that I had not read yet. I looked through the review written by Professor Cullen. She wrote that I had a gift for story writing.

I was proud that I achieved what I thought was impossible .For so long I believed I wasn’t as good as I thought I was and that my talent was not enough to cover up my lack of wring skills .But this review proved that I was truly a good writer and that there was a future ahead of me in the field of fiction writing. The review and the five stars meant the world of me. Those five stars became the symbol of my success.

      66. How did the writer get the school paper?

      A. His teacher gave it to him first

      B. The publisher sent it to him first

      C. His friend helped him get the first one.

      D. He rushed ahead to get the first one by himself.

      67. What can we learn about Professor Cullen?

      A. She was very gentle to everyone

      B. She seldom praised her students.

      C. She was very cold to her students.

      D. She was respected by her students.

      68. We can learn from this text that Peter_______.

      A. had thought his story was better than those of others

      B. was always anxious to know the review about him

      C. didn’t know he got five stars until others told him

      D. looked through a few stories that had got four stars

      69. What did Professor Cullen think of Peter’s story?

      A. She thought highly of it

      B. She thought it was just so-so

      C. She thought it was extremely bad

      D. She doubted if it was written by him.

      70. Why did the review and the five stars mean the world to Peter?

      A. Because they helped him learn writing skills

      B. Because they made him happy for some time

      C. Because they helped him enter a key university

      D. Because they made him see his writing talents.

      C

Many of today's gardeners are rejecting(拒绝) poisonous chemicals and pesticides in favor of being more environmentally friendly. For common garden problems, there are many simple, organic remedies(修补办法)that can be made from items which can be found in the home.

Weeds are a common and very frustrating problem for many gardeners. Pulling, digging and treating with harsh chemicals are not the easiest or most environmentally friendly solutions to weed growth. For a better weed treatment, spray the unwanted plants with full strength household vinegar in full sun. This treatment is safe to use and very inexpensive and it works!

Aphids (蚜虫) are annoying and destructive. Don't head to the store for aphid treatments, spray the affected plants with a very small amount of dish soap diluted (稀释) in water. Let the treatment sit for a few minutes or an hour and wash them with clear water. This treatment is extremely inexpensive, safe and works on even the toughest aphid epidemics.

Sometimes, gardens attract larger pests, like deer. Despite their beauty, they can be very destructive in gardens. Deer can be discouraged by placing human hair around the garden (you can pick up your clippings at the salon). Another natural deer repellent (驱虫剂) is bar soap with a strong smell. Place shavings around your garden for an inexpensive, but effective repellent.

Wild rabbits are also common and hungry garden visitors. No need to hurt them, just use garlic or lavender(薰衣草)around the edge of your garden. Both smell terrible to rabbits, and they'll bypass your garden entirely.

Removing weeds and pests from gardens can be done safely and inexpensively with these common organic solutions. Help save the environment and your garden by trying some of these methods today!

What is the correct way to take medicine? Knowing it will not only help you preserve the full benefit of your valuable medicine, but also avoid potential side effects. For many reasons, no drug is 100 percent effective in all people or situations. To preserve the full benefit of your medicine, experts say we should follow these key steps. Ask doctors for help. Discuss drug effectiveness with a doctor before getting a prescription (处方). The doctor can help you explain effectiveness data in product instructions. You can also ask a chemist for help when buying over-the counter (非处方)medications.

Store drugs properly. For example, never store aspirin in the bathroom. That’s because aspirin, like other drugs, can lose effectiveness in wet conditions. Also, some drugs, such as the antibiotic tetracycline(四环素), can be ineffective when exposed to sunlight.

Do you know how long you should use a certain medicine? Our human body is very smart. That’s why the body builds up tolerance to many drugs, such as some sleeping pills, and pain medications. If a drug that once was effective no longer seems to help you, ask a doctor before you want to increase the amount of it.

Cutting a pill can make a drug ineffective or even dangerous. Also avoid emptying capsules (胶囊) into drinks, such as coca cola, milk, juice, or food like porridge and soup. So take the pill in a correct way.

Do you know when to use medicine? You are advised to take drugs at right time, Taking drugs at right time such as before meals, or after meals can increase absorption(吸收).

Some people may store medicine they bought years ago. In actual fact, over time, many drugs experience chemical changes. So don’t hesitate to throw old pills if possible.

      Section C (10 points)

Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and required words limit. Write your answers on your answer sheet.

It was a winter morning, just two weeks before Christmas 2005. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor, he returned to find his bike gone.

The bike was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.

People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we, too, can share with others.
