5。disappearance n.消失

vanish v.消失(指突然的消失)

6。 ransom n. 赎金

pay ransom to sb.

      The old lady paid a ransom of one thousand pounds to the kidnapper.

hold sb to ransom 绑票(索取赎金)

      They kidnapped the boy and held him to rensom.

 

7. astound v. 使吃惊

语意程度比surprise要强得多


吃惊程度 astoud>amaze>astonish>surprise

He was astounded to hear of her death.

They were amazed to find the lazy girl came very early.

 

8. follow v.遵照,依照……行事

follow one’s own principles

follow sb.’s advice

follow one’s nose 照直往前走,凭直觉行事

Just follow your nose and you’ll get there.

关于 owing to的一点用法:
owing to与because of一样,也强调因果关系,除作状语外,也可作表语。作状语时修饰整个句子,可在句首或句末,用逗号隔开。如:
作状语:They decided to cancel the flight,owing to the storm. 由于这场暴风雨,他们决定取消这个航班。
作表语:
